Penn State Student Affairs Anti-Veteran Video???

I heard about this video on Quinn and Rose XM radio 158. I did a search of Worrisome Veteran Penn State and sure enough this video came to the surface in many places. anyone know about this video? I do find it odd that there is no title, credits or statement of use . . . BUT . . . if Penn State is using and distributing this video, I think some action in the form of phone calls, letters and public awareness are in order! We need to support all our brave men and women in uniform.

I am sure the exposure this has gotten has the folks that put this out in complete cover up mode.

I am sure the Young Republicans at PSU would be able to sniff this out fairly well.
Seems this message made it back to the right people! We are making a difference ;-).

Penn State apologizes for video portrayal of veteran
Friday, April 10, 2009
The Associated Press
Penn State officials have apologized for a faculty training video that portrayed a veteran as an argumentative and potentially threatening student.

The university yesterday released a statement saying there was no intention to stereotype veterans. The statement said focus groups that included veterans viewed the video and no one indicated offense.

The video portrayed a veteran as raising his voice as he complained to a professor about his grade. It has been removed from Penn State's Web site after complaints from members of the Penn State Veterans Organization.

The video was created as a training tool and posted on a Web page designed to teach professors how to cope with difficult students.
Karen,

Thanks for the update!

Good news is always welcome!
What would be even better to see is if the University would treat this "situation" as they treat other issues of insensitively on campus . . . mandatory sensitivity training of all . . . .those who where involved in and or who had knowledge of, this film plus all those in the corresponding colleges or organizations . . . after all isn't fairness and equal treatment for all what diversity training is all about? I know of many minor incidents on campus that has sent the whole department into sensitively class . . .. just substitute Veteran for any other class or minority and this would become a University "teaching moment"! It will never happen and if one supports free speech it should not happen . . .but it would be poetic justice :-)
I was the adviser of the Penn State Veterans' Organization a few years ago, and I'm still in touch with the members, although I'm not really active with them anymore...yes, they've rallied against this blatant...er, "training video".

I've also participated as a member of President Spanier's Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity at Penn State, so I think I have a good perspective on this one.

What gets me is that veterans are specifically named as a protected group in the "zero tolerance for hate" stipulations, such as university policy AD42. Whoever made this, should have known that:

"The Pennsylvania State University is committed to the policy that all persons shall have equal access to programs, facilities, admission and employment without regard to personal characteristics not related to ability, performance, or qualifications as determined by University policy or by state or federal authorities. It is the policy of the University to maintain an academic and work environment free of discrimination, including harassment. The Pennsylvania State University prohibits discrimination and harassment against any person because of age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or veteran status. Discrimination or harassment against faculty, staff or students will not be tolerated at The Pennsylvania State University. "

Now, while it's no secret that there is a liberal bias at Dear Old State, I can't believe that the video actually made it past the approval chain and got posted. I suppose they are getting cocky, these days, and believe they can get away with double standards.

For what it's worth, the climate at Penn State isn't anti-veteran, per se. It's anti-masculinity. Anybody that shows a modicum of passion is labeled and treated in an adversarial manner. Anybody who raises their voice or takes a strong stand on anything is labeled as a possible threat.

I can tell you stories that'll make you wonder how much you really know Penn State, that's for sure.

The sad thing is that I doubt the video was created with any malice at heart. I think the creator probably really believes that veterans are all capable of violent, sociopathic behavior, simply because, on the whole, they (veterans) don't act like a bunch of scared little rabbits. Masculinity=fear for academicians. Strong individuals scare whiny liberals, and they gang up to put an end to it. This video was simply an honest reflection of the maker's personal feelings, because, of course, anybody who's had military training must surely be an axe murderer at heart, right?

By the way, PSUVO (Penn State Veterans' Organization) could use your help and support. Check out their web site at www.psuvo.org - donations are always welcome.
Thanks for the insight, Bill. I am so impressed with the professionalism and the vast knowledge and experience of people in our group. It is good to have a PSU insider perspective!
Thanks,
Kris

Thanks...some last minute things came up, but I'll be at the tea party with my camera.

We missed you last night. You and the others have hit the nail on the head.
I've been around the Penn State block a few times, that's for sure ;-)

I've considered writing an expose one of these years, calling it something like, "My Life at Penn State: An Outsiders View from the Inside". I'm pretty sure they'd sue me into oblivion, though...or worse!
