I was the adviser of the Penn State Veterans' Organization a few years ago, and I'm still in touch with the members, although I'm not really active with them anymore...yes, they've rallied against this blatant...er, "training video".
I've also participated as a member of President Spanier's Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity at Penn State, so I think I have a good perspective on this one.
What gets me is that veterans are specifically named as a protected group in the "zero tolerance for hate" stipulations, such as university policy AD42. Whoever made this, should have known that:
"The Pennsylvania State University is committed to the policy that all persons shall have equal access to programs, facilities, admission and employment without regard to personal characteristics not related to ability, performance, or qualifications as determined by University policy or by state or federal authorities. It is the policy of the University to maintain an academic and work environment free of discrimination, including harassment. The Pennsylvania State University prohibits discrimination and harassment against any person because of age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or veteran status. Discrimination or harassment against faculty, staff or students will not be tolerated at The Pennsylvania State University. "
Now, while it's no secret that there is a liberal bias at Dear Old State, I can't believe that the video actually made it past the approval chain and got posted. I suppose they are getting cocky, these days, and believe they can get away with double standards.
For what it's worth, the climate at Penn State isn't anti-veteran, per se. It's anti-masculinity. Anybody that shows a modicum of passion is labeled and treated in an adversarial manner. Anybody who raises their voice or takes a strong stand on anything is labeled as a possible threat.
I can tell you stories that'll make you wonder how much you really know Penn State, that's for sure.
The sad thing is that I doubt the video was created with any malice at heart. I think the creator probably really believes that veterans are all capable of violent, sociopathic behavior, simply because, on the whole, they (veterans) don't act like a bunch of scared little rabbits. Masculinity=fear for academicians. Strong individuals scare whiny liberals, and they gang up to put an end to it. This video was simply an honest reflection of the maker's personal feelings, because, of course, anybody who's had military training must surely be an axe murderer at heart, right?
By the way, PSUVO (Penn State Veterans' Organization) could use your help and support. Check out their web site at www.psuvo.org - donations are always welcome.
Bill:
We missed you last night. You and the others have hit the nail on the head.
Thanks for the insight, Bill. I am so impressed with the professionalism and the vast knowledge and experience of people in our group. It is good to have a PSU insider perspective!
Thanks, Kris
