Humility, and re-learning that I still have much to learn.

During a recent discussion in the group "Friends of the Second Amendment" Joe and Dan replied to a thread I started about OC (open carry). Basically they challenged me, in a positive way, to think and rethink my actions (link below).

As I was replying to their comments I cockily thought that I had considered my decisions and actions far enough in depth that they could not throw me a curve. This is where the part about "Humility, and re-learning that I still have much to learn" comes into play.

I had NEVER considered that I was unprepared for such an obvious situation where my life could be in danger. Below are two cases where the deceased probably felt completely safe in their surroundings.

Granted, in the case where the Mother murdered her son there was probably no way to have anticipated such a horrendous act, ever.

In the other case I do not have much information, but again - the individual probably felt safe in his surroundings.

Now back to where I have obviously dropped the ball. I have NEVER felt concerned for my safety at the outdoor shooting range. I "assumed" that other enthusiasts of the sport could never harbor criminal intent. Obviously I was wrong.

Joe brought up the following point "I am not walking 50 - 200 yards to change my targets leaving my guns sitting on a bench..." How could I have been so naive as not to consider this point? I will immediately be changing my routine to be more aware and protected when "down range".

Please learn the following from my "learning experience": You can never be too prepared - It can happen anywhere - It can happen to anyone - It can happen anytime - And yes, "Don't leave home without it."
