Heather:

Appears that more states are jumping on to the "States Rights" band wagon. Hopefully when the case eventually gets to the Supreme Court most if not all will have a vested interest in it.

LAUTENBERG LEGISLATION CLOAKS GUN BAN AGENDA AS ANTI-TERROR TOOL

For Immediate Release: June 22, 2009

BELLEVUE, WA – Legislation introduced today by veteran anti-gun New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg is designed to expand his gun prohibition agenda under the cloak of national security, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said.

Sen. Lautenberg’s new “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009” would place unprecedented authority in the hands of the Attorney General to deny someone their Second Amendment rights without having been convicted, or even charged, with any crime. Instead, under this legislation, someone whose name is added – for whatever reason – to a terrorist watch list can suddenly find himself or herself prohibited from exercising their constitutionally-protected rights based on nothing more than suspicion.

“Frank Lautenberg has devoted his entire political career to stripping as many citizens as possible of their firearm civil rights,” noted CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “His motivation appears to be a Government Accountability Office report that asserts 963 cases of known or suspected terrorists trying to buy firearms over a five-year period from 2004 through February of this year. However, in 90 percent of those cases, the purchases were allowed after the buyer cleared an FBI instant background check.

“Lautenberg calls this the ‘terror loophole’,” he added, “yet neither he, nor anyone else, can adequately explain how someone gets their name on a so-called ‘terrorist watch list,’ and there appears to be no way to get one’s name off such a list once it is there.

“In Lautenberg’s world view,” Gottlieb observed, “any American citizen interested in owning a gun is a potential terrorist. Would he add all of our names to such a watch list, thus stripping us of our Second Amendment rights, without first being charged, prosecuted and convicted of some crime? Probably he would.

“In 2007,” Gottlieb recalled, “Lautenberg lamented that a similar bill went nowhere. He claimed it was blocked because too many of his colleagues ‘knuckled under to the gun lobby.’ Better that Congress protect gun owners’ civil rights than be browbeaten by a knucklehead.”

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation’s premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States. The Citizens Committee can be reached by phone at (425) 454-4911, on the Internet at www.ccrkba.org or by email to InformationRequest@ccrkba.org.

Eight Republicans Help Confirm a Hard-Core Gun Banner -- And how to keep Senators from "spinning" their support for gun control

"Too much work [was] left undone. After a few sleepless nights, I wrote
for myself a list of issues on which I needed to do more in the years
ahead. One of those issues was global regulation of small arms." --
Harold Hongju Koh (2001)

Friday, June 26, 2009

Imagine that. The Senate confirmed this week, by a vote of 62-35, a gun
banner who stays up at night thinking of ways to impose more gun control
upon American citizens.

Harold Koh is that gun grabber, and he was confirmed yesterday to be the
Legal Adviser at the State Department.

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans attempted to kill the Koh nomination
with a filibuster -- until eight of them crossed the aisle to help
Democrats confirm Koh.

The back-stabbing Senators are: Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Susan Collins
(R-ME), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Richard Lugar (R-IN), Mel
Martinez (R-FL), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and George Voinovich (R-OH).

Once the filibuster was thwarted, Koh's nomination passed easily. The
vote on final passage can be viewed at: http://tinyurl.com/m4m2f5

Koh is eager to assume his post at the State Department, having lamented
that there is only so much that can be done from the outside to push gun
control treaties, and that ultimately we need people like him in
positions of power. The chief lawyer for the State Department is just
the position someone like him needs to push more gun control through
international treaties.

GOA will continue watching for any attempt by the Obama administration
to foist an international gun control treaty upon the citizens of the
U.S.

Please stay tuned.

Don't Let Your Senators Escape the Heat of the Spotlight!

If you have been watching the news, you have no doubt seen stories on
the health care debate. This is the topic de jour on Capitol Hill, and
Congress is ramping up to vote on a bill in a few weeks.

Last week, GOA alerted you to the fact that the whole health care issue
has become a Trojan Horse for gun control, among other things.

However, there are detractors who claim that the current health care
debate will have nothing to do with guns. For example, GOA has been
"informed" that a search of the TeddyCare bill does not turn up the word
"guns," and that the word "database" is seen only a few times.

Hmm, if your Senator's office gives you that as a response, then tell
them not to be so lazy and naive.

One needs to do more than type in a word search in order to analyze
legislation. The database was set up under section 3001(c)(3)(i) of the
stimulus bill. But the Kennedy bill allows for sweeping new
regulations, which make it potentially impossible for any doctor to
refuse to enter your records under the current section 13112 exemption.

Many things you tell your doctor in the privacy of his office could
affect your right to own a firearm. And just because anti-gun zealot Ted
Kennedy doesn't notify us up front of his anti-gun intentions doesn't
mean they don't exist.

Frankly, we got this same garbage in connection with the Veterans
Disarmament Act (officially known as the NICS Improvement Act), where
the anti-gunners took away the guns of 150,000 veterans through language
which was not explicit. Before the bill was signed into law last year,
some detractors even claimed that because the NICS bill did not mention
the word "veterans," we must have been wrong to suggest that the bill
would disarm vets!

Well, guess what? The disarmament which was already occurring before
President Bush signed the legislation into law last year is now
occurring with a vengeance under the Obama administration. (In fact,
GOA members should be looking for an upcoming mailing which will give
you postcards to send in support of an important bill -- introduced by
Sen. Burr of North Carolina -- which will protect veterans from the
fangs of the Veterans Disarmament Act.)

The point is, no Senate staffer should ever give you an opinion on a
bill unless he has read the entire code that the bill will be amending.
Nor should they ignore the potential for an Obama administration to
abuse any particular piece of legislation.

Remember how the RICO Act, originally enacted to help combat the Mafia,
was later used to crack down on legitimate banks and peaceful pro-life
protesters? The original RICO Act never used the word "abortion," but
that didn't stop overzealous prosecutors from going after the
non-violent protestors.

And who would have thought, when the original Brady law was passed in
1993, that it would be used to keep people with outstanding traffic
tickets... or couples with marriage problems... or military vets with
nightmares from buying guns? After all, the Brady law never mentioned
those people groups, and yet the law has been used over the past 15-plus
years to deny gun rights to those very people.

Reading legislation is not a job for the timid or the lazy. If staffers
in your Senate offices aren't willing to read current bills IN THE LIGHT
OF EXISTING LAWS -- and to do the research necessary to compile this
information -- then politely encourage them to get another line of work.

Now things get interesting...

In 2004, longtime Ron Paul supporter Gary Marbut, president of the Montana Shooting Sports Association, wrote the Montana Firearms Freedom Act, which declares federal firearms laws relating to the vast majority of guns built, used, and kept within the state of Montana to be null and void.

On April 15, 2009, Governor Brian Schweitzer signed the Act, HB 246, into law, thanks to the efforts of another Ron Paul supporter, freshman legislator Joel Boniek, and the combined efforts of Campaign for Liberty members and other freedom-minded activists.

According to Gary, "Now clones of the MFFA have been introduced in AK, TX, TN, SC, and MN. The TN clone has passed the House and Senate with considerable majorities. I hear serious talk about more clones of the MFFA to be introduced ASAP in FL, GA, MO, OK, KS, CO, AZ, WY, UT, ID, and WA."

Not one to step down after such a rebuke, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) has sent a letter to all Montana Federal Firearms Licensees telling them to ignore Montana's law.

Read the letter here.

How will the state respond? Stay tuned.

For all of you who carry a firearm for self defense, may I make a suggestion? Please take the time and expense and get yourself professionally trained. I have carried concealed for 16+ years and never thought I would need to take a firearms training course. I go to the range on a regular basis, practice drills on body targets from 4 to 7 yard distances, shoot 200+ rnds each time. Why would I pay for a class to teach me target shooting? The last couple of years I have changed my position on this issue of training. They say to be proficient in the use of a handgun for personal defense, you should seek training by a professional instructor, and after some thought, that is what I have done.

After some research online looking up training centers, I could not imagine traveling thousands of miles to, say, the Gunsite Training Acadamy in Arizona and spend 3 to 4 days there, $1,000 for the course, not to mention throw in with it the cost of gas, food, ammo, etc. That would be too much for me to handle, not to mention my wife would not go for it, even though the training would also potentially save her life as well as my childrens' lives.

That is when I ran across www.pistoltraining.com run by Randy L. Smith here in Centre County. I looking into his classes, read the course info, and got in contact with him. He explained everything up front, and I scheduled my first course, Basic Defensive Handgun. The class cost me $295 and was held just outside of State College. I was apprehensive at first, being I have carried concealed for many years and felt pretty proficient with my handgun. Yeah, little did I know I was doing things the wrong way, for example, drawing from my holster. Randy will teach you the basics of concealed carry, self defense laws in PA, lethal force, etc.

Taking this course was the was the single best investment I have ever made. The course was limited to 8 students with Randy and 2 additional instructors, which gave us a one-on-one approach to every aspect of the use of a firearm for self defense. Over the course of 2 days, we practiced drawing from concealment, moving and firing, breaking tunnel vision drills, shooting from cover/concealment, verbal commands, clearing stoppages, dry fire practice drills, etc. This course does not teach target shooting, it teaches you to FIGHT with a handgun, stay alive, stay focused, and win the fight.

I have completed this course, along with the Advanced Defensive Handgun course just last month, and do highly recommend these courses to anyone who carries a firearm for self defense. Randy, along with the other instructors, will teach you things you have never thought about or even practiced before.

I encourage all of you to check out his website at www.pistoltraining.com and get yourself professionally trained. Check out Randy's Qualifications, you will be impressed. This dude knows his stuff. I had the greatest time taking these 2 courses, and look forward to taking his Defensive Shotgun class as well.
