Event Description

On Tuesday evening, you are invited to come meet and speak with your primary election candidates. Any candidate is welcome to come, and the public is invited to speak with them.

Each candidate will be given the opportunity to make a few opening remarks, and then the floor will be open for questions. The only restrictions are:

1) The candidates themselves will not be allowed to question their opponents, or members of opposing parties.

2) All candidates are to be treated with respect, regardless of party or political view.

3) Candidates will be there to discuss their own principles, views, or positions on issues. Candidates will be asked to refrain from discussing their opponents, or directing comments to their opponents, whether present or not.

4) Questions to a candidate about their opponents will not be allowed.

Most of the candidates attending are for State Representative, or GOP executive positions, but one candidate for the US House of Representatives will be there.

My suggestion is that you learn as much as possible about each of the candidate's core principles, as that will tell you how they are likely to vote on any particular issue. This way, we don't get bogged down in discussions of specific issues, that may not reveal the candidate's core principles.

So I would ask about their views on the purpose of government, the Pennsylvania Constitution, taxation, the powers and limits on States imposed by the Federal Constitution, etc.

Comment by Peter Trippett on April 20, 2010 at 1:44pm: I want to publicly apologize in advance, that I have been so busy with events last week, and some things happening in my personal life, that I have not had a chance to formally and directly invite Democratic Party candidates to this event.

The Chair Person of the local Democratic Party has been known to monitor our site, and I was hoping that they would get the word that way, or through some of our other public announcements.

Our group exists to support the principles of individual rights and limited government, as stated in the Constitution. Such views are commonly held by those who call themselves Conservative, or who associate with the Republican Party.

However, the very name of our group is intended to promote unity: 9-12 referring to Sept. 12, the day after the terrorist attacks, when we felt united as Americans; and 9-12 referring to 9 principles and 12 values that most people are likely to agree with, regardless of their political views.

We should be searching for those areas we do agree upon. That is the basis for our desire to include Democrats in our discussions. And, it is the reason that we do invite them to join us for any of our events. Some already have. If you come, you will be treated with respect.

We are likely to have another Candidate's Night before the General Election this November. That event would probably be of more interest to any Democratic Party candidates. I promise that, at that time, the Democratic Party will be offered a fair chance to come speak with us.

I was remiss in not doing so this time, and I am very sorry.
