GRASSROOTS LEADERS MET WITH THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE, MICHAEL STEELE

On February 16th, 2010, The Executive Director and Assistant Director of UNITEPA, Lancaster County, had the honor of joining the leaders of thirty other prominent grassroots organizations from across the United States to meet with Michael Steele, Chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC). The goal of the Washington D.C. meeting was to open a dialogue with the RNC and to communicate our ideals concerning advancement of the principles of conservatism and limited government. All fifty leaders in the room were adamant that we are not about party politics; we are about restoring integrity and common sense to our system of government.

The meeting was incredibly robust, not just due to what Mr. Steele had to say, but also that he listened attentively to everything we had to say. We explained that we are frustrated with both parties and complained that no one is listening to the groundswell of American voices represented by the grassroots movement.

As a group, we were very unified in our recommendations to Chairman Steele as to how the RNC could benefit from the patriotic passion and fervor toward genuine conservatism that is intensifying across our nation. He took notes as we respectfully conveyed our appeal that The Republican Party needs to constantly and uncompromisingly stand for limited government, lowering taxes, strict adherence to the Constitution, cutting spending, no earmarks, no pork projects, and protecting our National sovereignty.

We also asked Mr. Steele, in his official capacity as RNC Chairman and spokesman, to do more to call out the Obama Administration, and the leadership in Congress, clearly and loudly on their Progressive, unconstitutional agenda. He agreed. He also agreed to consistently point out that the Republican Party has no desire to co-opt the grassroots movement. He expressed his hopes that "the GOP and the growing grassroots organizations will be able to work together to get as many conservative candidates elected to public office as possible on every level."
He acknowledged that mistakes have been made by the GOP leadership and he will work to try to make sure they don't happen again. He encouraged all of us to keep our energy up, "stay true to our roots" and ramp it up even higher, if possible.

He stated that what we are doing is having a profound effect, similar to that accomplished by our Nation's founders. He suggested that if we really want to change the Republican Party, "we need to do it from the bottom up". He said, "that will change the leadership and the reason for the retirements on the left." That means starting at the Precinct level by running and electing good, constitutional conservatives. He said, "The RNC is looking to you for its marching orders - not the other way around."

Steele also responded to the request to have all "Tea Party" references removed from any logos or websites generated by the GOP. He followed through on Tuesday night by starting with the elimination of a Website focused on the "Tea Party" movement.

He also addressed the fact that "Congress" has absolutely no idea what to do with US. They are at a loss on how to deal with this movement and "D.C. doesn't get it".

Some of the leaders that attended this meeting came under intense criticism from certain elements of the Tea Party organization for "selling out" by attending this meeting and partnering with the Republicans. Nothing can be further from the truth. We made certain that Chairman Steele recognized our independence and autonomy. This meeting was a golden opportunity to drive that point home, and we made the most of it. Our plan is to continue reaching out to all "Parties" to assert our strong influence on the process.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Chairman Steele agreed to hold more events like this one on a more regional basis, as to allow even more grassroots organizations the opportunity to attend and share their views.
